The CAFE Menu is posted in my classroom.  It
provides students with a "menu"  of strategies
for decoding, comprehending, building fluency
and expanding vocabulary. Under each of the
categories below, I have included some of the
strategies that we use in my classroom.
Comprehension
  • Check for understanding
  • Back up and reread

Accuracy
  • Cross-checking
      Does it sound right?
      Does it look right?
      Does it make sense?
  • Slide through the word
  • Look for chunks you know
  • Cover up part of the word
  • Flip the sound
Fluency
  • Read the way you talk
  • Read with expression
Expand Vocabulary
  • Tune in to Interesting Words
