| Making Class Big Books |
| Our class makes at least one big book a month. Each child usually creates one page of the big book. Sometimes the children work in small coooperative groups as they create the pages. Making classroom big books is a great way to practice and reinforce early reading and writing skills. The children are also able to take the big book home for a night and share it with their family. I usually use white construction paper for the pages and then have the book bound. The front and back covers are laminated. MONTHLY IDEAS FOR BIG BOOKS AUGUST/SEPTEMBER NAME BIG BOOK The name book consists of one page for each child with his/her name and picture. The cover is in the shape of a school house with the name of our school printed at the top. |

THE SMILEY BIG BOOK Smile when you say good morning For a smile makes the morning bright, Smile when you say good morning, For a smile starts the day off right! After teaching the children the poem, brainstorm a list of things that make them smile. Each child draws a picture of something that makes them smile. Then label each picture using the sentence frame, _____________ smiles when _______________________. We collate the pictures into a class book and make a cover with (you guessed it!) lots of smiley faces. Idea from Mrs. Burns Classroom http://pages.cthome.net/jtburn/ OCTOBER "I Am A Scarecrow" The Pages: The book is "tall", or vertical rather than the usual horizontal. It also can be run off so that each page is 8 1/2x11. The students color ONLY the body or clothing part named in the text. It is not cummulative! My shirt is red. My pants are blue. My patches are purple. My face is pink. My hat is yellow. My bandana is orange. My boots are brown. My bird is black. (A crow perched on the scarecrow's shoulder) My gloves are green. The Cover: The students may color and cut a complete scarecrow and glue it on the cover. The cover scarecrow is the only one completely colored in. Halloween Disguises This is a flip-up book. The flap is made of a person shape. On this shape the children draw their Halloween costume. On a piece of manilla or white construction paper, the children glue a person shape cut-out of themselves in ordinary clothing. We use a brass fastener to attach the Halloween costume picture. Then we add the predictable text, "Who do I see with my very own eyes? I believe it must be (insert child's name) in his/her Halloween disguise!" Idea from Mrs. Burns' Classroom http://pages.cthome.net/jtburn/ NOVEMBER "Our Thankful Book" Each child completes one page with the sentence; "I am thankful for_____________. The pages are illustrated and a cover is made. The book is then bound and added to our classroom library. |
