| Computers in our Classroom |
| We have 5 computers in our classroom. Children use them to reinforce skills, to read online stories, to check the temperature, to create and write, for collaborate projects with other classrooms in the United States, and to explore webquests. We have a file box for the children in the classroom. The file box has an index card for each child with the programs that I would like for him/her to do on the computer. At the beginning of the year I assess to see where each child's skill level is in reading, writing and math and then match up computer programs and online games to reinforce needed skills. Here are some ideas for computer management: 1. Place a brightly colored plastic cup next to each computer. When students need help they place their cup on top of their computer as a signal for assistance. Assign a couple of computer experts in the room and they will assist first and then the teacher or para or parent helper if assistance is still needed. 2. At the beginning of the school year demonstate to the class or small groups of students the proper way to use the computer. Also go through each software program they may be using during computer time. 3. Develop a computer schedule that allows each student to work for 2 days a week for at least 20 minutes each session. I also have free choice time when computers are on a first come fist serve basis. 4. Try to incorporate classroom themes with your software programs or go online for games and webquests that relate to the theme. 5. Write directions for basic computer skills and also for computer activities on index cards and laminate them. |
