Pumpkin Unit
We start out the unit by making our "Welcome to our
Pumpkin Patch," bulletin board. Each child draws a
pumpkin on white paper and then paints the pumpkin with
orange glitter paint. After a trip to the pumpkin patch, I
take a picture of the children with their pumpkin and add it
to the bulletin board. On sentence strips each child writes
one fact about pumpkins.
We also have a class pumpkin. On Halloween we carve our
pumpkin and count the seeds. First the children estimate how
many seeds they think are in the pumpkin. In small groups they
count the seeds into groups of ten. We then count by tens to get
the total number of seeds.
With the children's pumpkins they chose from the pumpkin patch we
do several activities. We weigh and measure the pumpkins. They
draw a picture of their pumpkins and write describing words.
