Daily Schedule

1st Grade

Settling-in-time - 8:00 a.m
The children get organized and then choose big books, trade books or
books at their reading level and read quietly at the tables.

Morning Meeting - 8:15
Daily News - I write a letter to the children or we write news from home.  
We do calendar and weather.  We recite the weekly poem and sing songs
related to our current theme.

Working With Words - 8:45
Phonics/Spelling/Word Wall Instruction

Recess - 9:45

Guided Reading - 10:00
Whole group/small group reading.  Reading comprehension is the focus.

Snack - 10:50


Journal Writing - 11:00


Lunch/Recess - 10:20


Shared Reading - 12:00
Teacher reads aloud to the whole class.

Art - 12:15 - 1:00  Monday
Gym - 12:15 - 12:45  Tuesday
Library - 12:15 - 12:45 Wednesday
Gym - 12:15 - 12:45  Thursday
Music - 12:45 - 1:30  Thursday
Library - 12:15 - 12:45  Friday

Self Selected Reading -  12:45
Children read
independently and conference with teacher/ Children
share
(several children share daily with the whole class what they have
been reading.)

Math - 1:15

Recess - 1:45

Centers -  (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)
Centers are teacher directed for the first 20 - 30  minutes and then the
children may choose a center of interest.

Teacher Directed Centers:
Math:
The children work on open ended math activities at their individual
skill level.
Reading: The children read books at their independent reading level or do
a variety of reading activities.
Writing: The children usually choose thier own topic; sometime I choose
the topic.

Theme/Writing - (Monday and Friday)  The children do science and
social studies projects and/or craft activities related to the theme.  The
weekly theme is sometimes integrated into the centers.  
Writing activities
are also included during this time.
