Polar Bears: Read - Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do you Hear? and Polar, The Titanic Bear. Discuss how polar bears have a layer of blubber under their fur to keep them warm. The experiment below is a great experiment to help the children understand how a polar bear can swim and stay warm in the icy cold arctic ocean. Science Experiment: Take a baggy and fill it with shortening. Have the children place their right hand in a bucket of ice cold water. Have them put their left hand in the baggy filled with shortening. I have them put their left hand in an empty baggy first and then into the baggy filled with the shortening. They then place their left hand (their polar bear hand) into the ice cold water. Have them discuss and fill out a form explaining with pictures and/or words and sentences the difference of temperature between their hand and their polar bear hand.
To begin our unit we watch a video on all types of bears. I then have each child bring in a bear from home. I read, "Teddy Bears Cure a Cold." We then pretend that our bears are sick. We build beds and make quilts for our bears. When our bears are better we have a teddy bear picnic and the bear, beds, and quilts go home.
Teddy Bear Beds: measuring with a non-standard unit Have the children use unifix cubes to measure the length and width of their bears. Have them trace along the cubes and then cut out their bear beds from white tag board. Use paper towel rolls to make the legs for the beds.

Teddy Bear Quilts - using pattern blocks Have the children use pattern blocks to create a design for their quilts. Explain that quilts have a repeating pattern. Have the children glue their design onto paper using paper pattern block shapes. Have them repeat their design depending on how big their quilt is.
