Guided Reading Block

This block should last 30 to 40 minutes.

Goals For Guided Reading:

    Teach comprehensions skills and strategies.
Teach children how to read different types of literature.
Develop background knowledge and oral language.
Provide as much instruction-level reading as possible.
Maintain the self-confidence and motivation of struggling readers.

During the guided reading block not all of the children will be reading at their intructional reading level.   Children who read well above grade level will profit from the comprehension instruction and children who read
below grade level are provided strong support when grade-level materials are being read. Self-selected reading, writing, and working with words provide numerous appropriate reading and writing opportunities for above-and below-level readers.

During guided reading  basal readers, multiple copies of trade books, and big books are used.  I also use books that have been down loaded from the website
Reading A-Z, which has wonderful little books for all reading levels.

Segment 1 - Before Reading

Before reading the selection the teacher helps the children to build prior knowledge and to make connections from the selection to their own personal experiences.

Before Reading Activities:

Picture Walks -
Children name the things in the pictures and make predictions, teacher points out a few critical vocabulary words with which the students might have difficulty as the read the selection.

Guess the Covered Word: - The teacher takes four or five sentences from the selection and writes them on the board or on chart paper.   One word is covered up with a sticky note from each sentence.   The sentence is then read and the children make predictions as to what word is covered.  All words are recorded on the board.  The sticky note is  then removed only to reveal the first letter  and then the vowel and finally the entire word is revealed.

KWl Charts: A KWL chart about the selection being read.    what we Know,  what we Want to know, and after reading the selection, what we Learned

Graphic Organizers: The children are given a graphic organizer before reading as a purpose for reading the selection.  Some examples of graphic organizers might be a story map or a  prediction guide.

Segment 2 - During Reading
Reading Variations:

Choral Reading:
The entire class reads the selection out loud together.

Echo Reading: The teacher reads a sentence or so first and then the class repeats being the teacher's echo.

Shared Reading:
The class sits on the floor and listens as the teacher reads from a big book or predictable book.

Partner Reading: During partner reading the partners may take turns reading the pages, helping each other as needed.
One child might do the pointing, the other child the reading
.

Three-Ring Circus:
The teacher assigns 1/3 of the class to read with a partner, 1/3 to read by themselves, and the other 1/3 of the class to read with the teacher.

Readers' Theater

Flexible Groups: This group participates in the before and after activites with the whole group of students.  The teacher will now help the students to apply the reading strategies they have been learning.

'
I use guided reading a little differently then
Four Blocks Literacy Plan.  I work with small groups 2-3 times per week and use the whole group guided  reading on the other days of the week.   I work with my struggling readers in groups at least 3 times per week, my at-grade level readers a couple times a week and my above-grade level readers 1 time a week.

Segment 3 - After Reading
complete graphic organizers
complete KWL charts
confirm predictions
discuss sequence.
beach ball or dice with comprehension questions
written responses
cut up sentences
text without pictures
